Currently the kindergarten students are learning about Henri Matisse. We read the book Henri's Scissors to learn a little about Matisse, especially how he cut shapes out of painted paper. Most of these shapes were organic shapes (shapes with no name). We cut out our own organic shapes and made artwork influenced by the work of Matisse. |

This week all elementary students participated in an Albion Elementary tradition, creating paper snowflakes. The first week after holiday break each student cuts two paper snowflakes, one to decorate the art room, and one to take home. My favorite part is watching the amazement on some of the students faces as they unfold their snowflake.
1st grade students made either mitten ornaments or dishes out of clay. They started with a slab of clay, cut out the shape of a mitten using a template, carved out designs, let it dry, put it in the kiln to harden, painted with water colors, and then put the pipe cleaner in so it can hang. I then sprayed each of the mittens with a clear gloss. Students can't wait to take these home!
Today the kindergarten students completed the Marshmallow Challenge. Each table of students got a yard of tape, a yard of string, 20 pieces of spaghetti, and 1 marshmallow. The goal is to work together to build the tallest freestanding structure that supports the marshmallow on top. The students has so much fun even though they were temped to eat the marshmallow. Watch the video below to learn who usually does well at the Marshmallow Challenge.
